Why I Started "Small Steps, Big Impact"

When I first started working with children, specifically when I started working at the Boys & Girls Club, I did not realize how much time I would spend helping kids with reading. Some of them love books and couldn't wait to crack open a book, while others would cross their arms up and completely shut down when asked to read. Seeing that difference made me wonder... what makes some kids light up to a story while others completely shut down before even starting? That question is what inspired this blog.

Where My Passion Comes From

I am a 20 year old junior currently studying English Education, but I originally started off in Elementary Education. The issues I have seen with children literacy is what pushed me to change to English Education. I have always believed reading can open doors not just in school, but also in life. Watching students finish their first chapter book or even reading aloud without fear for the first time is something so special. The little things parents, adults, college students, and educators can do to create these special moments makes all the difference.

  1. This post really resonated with me because your passion for helping children develop a love for reading shines through so clearly. I love how you emphasize that small moments, like encouraging a reluctant reader, can lead to lasting change. Your focus on making reading feel like an adventure instead of a chore is such a positive approach for both educators and students. What strategies have you found most effective for engaging students who are hesitant to pick up a book?
